Benefits of hair masks
Over time, damage can make your hair weak, brittle and frizzy. Hair masks help mitigate damage from everyday styling, washing and exposure to elements like sunlight.
With concentrated, deep-nourishing ingredients, they help repair hair that’s been chemically treated or coloured.
Different types of masks are available. For example, a hair mask for hair growth will help if you’re trying to grow your hair out without getting split ends. A hair mask for damaged curly hair will help repair hair that’s dry or frizzy.
We stock a wide range of professional salon-quality hair masks to suit all hair types. These include moisture masks, smoothing masks, strengthening masks and more.
How to use a hair mask
Methods may vary for different types of masks, so it’s best to check the instructions.
Usually, you apply the mask to washed and towel-dried hair. Spread the mask evenly over your hair and then comb it through with your fingers.
Leave the hair mask on – typically for about 20 minutes, depending on your hair’s condition. Then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
What is the difference between hair mask and conditioner?
Although they both add moisture, there’s a significant difference between hair masks and conditioners.
Hair masks are noticeably thicker and richer than conditioners. They’re usually recommended for weekly or bi-weekly use.
In contrast, conditioner is often used daily to maintain healthy hair.
Hair masks typically contain much more concentrated mixtures of oils, vitamins and antioxidants.
They’re also left on the hair for longer than conditioner, to get the full benefit of the nourishing ingredients.
Should I use a hair mask before or after conditioner?
Most hairstylists recommend using conditioner after you’ve rinsed a hair mask out.
Don’t use a hair mask before conditioner, or oils from the conditioner may prevent the mask ingredients from penetrating the hair.
After using a nourishing hair mask, give your hair a really good, thorough rinse. This ensures there’s no residue. Then condition your hair like you normally would, to seal in the extra moisture and shine.
Professional versus DIY hair masks
Considering a coconut or avocado hair mask? Unfortunately, results from DIY masks are questionable. For the most part, there’s only anecdotal evidence of them working. They can get pretty messy, too!
We recommend using tried and tested professional hair masks, from leading salon-quality brands. These have been developed and tested specifically to repair and strengthen the hair.
