Why am I losing my hair?
- The most common form of hair loss is caused by Dihydrotestosterone DHT.
- DHT is a by-product of testosterone found in males and to some extent females.
- It is a steroid hormone just like testosterone, but three times more powerful and is produced in the adrenal glands, prostate, skin and scalp
- Essential it is genetic factor that signals the ignition of the creation of 5 alpha reductase in the hair follicle.
- After entering the cell of the hair follicle it alters the rate of protein synthesis (anagen growth phase)
- The prolonged effect of DHT, if left untreated, is the hair follicle will decay and the growth phase (anagen) is drastically reduced.
- The follicles on the scalp become shorter and thinner and eventually they completely cease to develop.
- This results in thinning & baldness.
- Essentially is the most common hair loss process for men.
Can it be stopped or reversed?
Yes, in most cases.
Most hair follicles reduce down to the size they were in infancy, they remain in this state for long periods of time. Eventually the thinner, weaker follicle does not survive. By beginning treatments with DHT blocking treatment, the testosterone is blocked, prohibiting its conversion into DHT, in the scalp area.
The DHT that remains in the hair follicle is purged and the follicle soon becomes healthy and begins to grow thicker, stronger hair. The anagen phase (hair growth) is enhanced and protein synthesis is restored.
The 10-5-2 Rule – are your hair follicles dead or alive?
- Women’s hair follicles will usually stay alive but dormant for at least 10 years.
- Men who start losing their hair in their 30’s and 40’s have hair follicles that will usually stay alive for at least 5 years.
- Men who start losing their hair in their late teens or early 20’s have hair follicles that will usually stay alive for at least 2 years.
